Two grids of fused blocks built by the same row-by-row walk, seeded differently and coloured in reverse.
The same process, twice
DrawComposition(canvas, offsetX, offsetY, PrimaryColor, SecondaryColor, seed: 42, rows);
DrawComposition(canvas, offsetX + gridW + gap, offsetY, SecondaryColor, PrimaryColor, seed: 137, rows);
Two panels, one procedure. The right-hand panel differs in exactly two ways: a different
seed, and the two colours exchanged.
That is a deliberate compositional device rather than a shortcut. Mirrored panels read as
one symmetric object; independently seeded panels read as two members of a family, and
the exchanged colours tie them together without making either subordinate.
The first rows of both panels.
Runs, not squares
Each row is walked left to right and broken into runs of consecutive cells. A run is not
drawn as a row of squares — only its outer boundary is stroked:
so a run of five cells becomes one long bar with no internal divisions, and a run of one
becomes a single square. The eye reads bar lengths, and the underlying grid is only
visible where two runs happen to end at the same column.
Two fifths of the rows.
Three fifths. Some cells take a small solid square instead of joining a run — the only
filled marks in the piece, and the only place the accent colour appears.
Four fifths.
Both panels complete: fifty-five rows of twenty-two cells each.
The seeds are literals
Not preset properties. Both panels use hard-coded seeds, so every rendering of this
piece has exactly the same walk and layout. Variants differ in colour, grid density,
and cell geometry, but not in the underlying sequence of decisions — which is unusual
for this collection, where most pieces vary their seed per preset.
Five palettes, four grid configurations
| Rendering | Grid | Ink |
|---|
| Matrix Green Coral | 22×55 | neon green and coral |
| Void Purple Gold | 18×46 | electric purple and gold, coarser cells |
| Deep Cyan Orange | 22×55 | cyan and orange, wider cells |
| Grain Chalk Amber | 30×72 | warm chalk on near-black, fine dense field |
| Paper Ink Burgundy | 24×60 | near-black lines on warm parchment |
Each rendering scales its pair of grids to fill the canvas with a consistent margin.
Grid dimensions vary across the set: the coarser variants use fewer, larger cells for
a bolder graphic weight; the dense variant packs 30×72 cells at a finer pitch for
an intricate, textile-like field; and the light-background variant inverts the
dark-field convention entirely.
Determinism
SeededRandom — the project’s stable Xoshiro256StarStar — is created once per panel
from a literal seed and consumed row by row, left to right. Same output on any machine,
every run.
The staged plates above are published as SVG rather than raster — the same fused
rectangles and strokes as path data instead of pixels, stage by stage.
